Economic Benefits of Marcellus Shale Development
The Appalachian Basin will see substantial economic benefits as a result of Marcellus Shale development. Through job creation and increased revenue for both the state and local businesses, the benefits will ripple across the region, providing money for businesses, schools and roads.
According to the Workforce Education and Development Initiative at Penn State University, production of natural gas in the Marcellus Shale will increase gross state product in Pennsylvania by more than $500 million a year. In addition, development of the Marcellus Shale will create nearly 8,000 jobs for every $1 billion in royalty income paid to area landowners.
Investments are already being made in the local economy. From hiring crane, gravel and heavy equipment companies to leasing space for field and regional offices, development of the Marcellus Shale is bringing positive economic effects to many communities. Chief workers are also eating in local restaurants and staying in nearby hotels.
And the economic benefits extend beyond the region. The Appalachian Basin's proximity to the high population areas of New England reduces transportation costs, providing a cost-conscious energy choice to million of Americans.
